OPPI Southwest District is pleased to host this important film exploring practical, community-driven solutions to Canada’s housing crisis. In this documentary, Dr. Brian Doucet travels from coast to coast, highlighting innovative policies, programs, and projects that are already reshaping how communities deliver and sustain genuinely affordable housing.

The film examines a range of approaches—from the use of public land to support non-market housing in communities such as Kitchener and Whistler, to inspiring Indigenous-led developments in Vancouver, and strong tenant protection and rent control frameworks in British Columbia and Prince Edward Island. Through these examples, Dr. Doucet illustrates how transformative, actionable strategies can improve housing outcomes in communities of all sizes.
Featuring interviews with more than 30 planners, policymakers, elected officials, developers, residents, and housing advocates, the film both informs and challenges viewers. It encourages reflection on the root causes of Canada’s housing crisis while showcasing pathways toward more equitable, sustainable, and long-term housing solutions.
Thinking Beyond the Market is written and directed by Dr. Brian Doucet, Associate Professor in the School of Planning at the University of Waterloo. More information about the film is available at www.housingfilm.ca.
We invite planners, architects, engineers, community partners, students, and residents to join us for this engaging screening and conversation about advancing equitable and sustainable housing solutions across Ontario.
