This interactive workshop is the primer you’ve been looking for on how land use planning is governed in Ontario. With facilitation from experienced practitioners, we will explore the policy and regulatory framework including at the Federal, Provincial, and local municipal levels, how decisions get made, and the role that planners play. Whether you are just starting your career, want a refresher, or work in an adjacent field and are looking to learn more about planning, this course is for you!

Duration: 3 hours

Learning Objectives

  • Build an understanding of the Planning Act and the Provincial Planning Statement;
  • Understand the hierarchy of legislative planning documents in Ontario;
  • Understand the historical context of major legislative documents;
  • Know where and how to find legislative documents at all levels of government;
  • Grow a familiarity with the structure of legislative documents at all levels, and how they apply in a real-world context;
  • Understand how municipalities pay for growth; and
  • Learn about the Ontario Land Tribunal, its purpose, how planners may expect to engage with the OLT, and the importance of defensibility in all planner’s work.
